Teaching statistics to non-specialists: challenges and strategies for success

Training in research methods is a crucial component of the student experience further and higher education. A common set statistical experimental design are taught across broad range non-mathematics disciplines, spanning STEM subjects, medicine, social sciences. Understanding these central to students’ ability engage with their course, tutors, literature. It also key enabling students become not only practitioners chosen subject, but statistically literate citizens, capable understanding evaluating everyday statistics. The first aim this paper review specific challenges faced by staff teaching learning statistics within disciplines. Secondly, we best practice current trends motivating effective courses for non-specialists. Our findings suggest that many stem from negative attitudes towards coupled poor motivation study factors which exacerbated anxiety. Fortunately, because so widespread, have attracted attention innovative educators there wealth good ideas resources available teachers seeking ways create experiences.
